Photo of the Week: Neko Harbor, Antarctica

29 Mar

After an all-night New Year's Eve celebration, we still were able to summit this rock VERY early the following morning. Our reward? A beautiful view over Neko Harbor

The Twittersphere and blogosphere (well, at least as they relate to travel) have been blowing up with pictures, videos, and descriptions of Antarctica.  Thus, I thought that I would join the fray with this, a pre-digital camera, scanned-in photo of Neko Harbor from New Year’s Day 2004.  It was unexpectedly warm that day, hence our lack of parkas.  If you ever thought that you wouldn’t be able to make it to all seven continents, prove yourself wrong.  Go!

I know, right?! You should see my picture from Deception Island, which is atop a collapsed volcano. All of us are in the water wearing only bathing suits, but you can’t even see our faces because there is so much steam rising from the water’s surface. Oh, Antarctica, land of unexpected contrasts….
