Bird Sex and Birthdays

I momentarily considered skipping the afternoon game drive in favor of more sleep, but I knew that I would be sad if I missed anything, so I dragged myself out of bed, grabbed my camera, and joined the group.  Now that we had seen the Big Five as well as a ton of the Mara’s other megafauna, we focused on snapping pictures of birds: menacing-looking marabou storks, a nesting vulture, an eagle, and ostriches.  Not just any ostriches, though.  Mating ostriches.

Up in the Air

Waking up at 3:30AM sucks.  Big time.  However, it was for a good cause: I, along with four other members of my group, was heading out to an early morning hot air balloon safari, which would be followed by a champagne breakfast and then a game drive.  We were on our way by 4:30AM, arrived at the launching site by 6:00AM, made a pit stop at the bathrooms, hustled to the balloons, and then waited for the wind to die down so that we could go up.  We waited.  And waited.  And waited.

The Big Five and the Masai

Though it was the third full day of our trip, and we had been so lucky thus far, the other group members and I were particularly excited: we would finally be heading to the Masai Mara for our first official day of safari.  The road there was long and very bumpy.  I was sitting in the back of the van, so I felt every bone- and teeth-jarring jostle.  After what seemed like forever, we arrived at our lodging.  On the way to my room, I heard another safari-goer from a different group talking about “numb bum”.  I smiled; apparently, the new “condition” that I acquired on the Mara road had a name.

In the Beginning

After roughly 24 hours of traveling and a multi-hour layover in Dubai, I finally landed in Nairobi late in the afternoon.  On the way to the hotel, the driver that had been sent to pick me up gave me some background information on Nairobi and Kenya and engaged me in a political discussion covering Obama’s potential reelection, the problem of endemic corruption in Nigeria (after learning of my ethnic background), and Kenya’s own upcoming elections.  We had a great conversation, and I was almost sorry to see him go when we got to the hotel.  After the normal front-desk formalities, I made my way to my room, where my as yet unknown roommate had already checked in.  I was anxious to settle in and figured that I had enough time to change clothes and nap before my roommate returned.  I was wrong.

On the Road Again

Every year, after months upon months of planning (sometimes longer), I take an awesome, month-long vacation; every year, I always have friends that ask me if I will be blogging about my trip; and, every year, I always say “no”.  I have always assumed that people would be completely uninterested in hearing about my trips, so I have contented myself with posting highlights here and there as my status updates on Facebook.  Well, in the interest of pushing my boundaries and trying new things, I have decided to finally blog about my vacation this year: two weeks of safari in Kenya and Tanzania, five days on the beach in Zanzibar, and a week-and-a-half backpacking in South Africa.
