Photo of the Week: Zagora, Morocco

Recently forged silver curios

In honor of today’s #FriFotos, here are some recently forged silver STARS that I saw in a large curio shop in Zagora, Morocco.

This was one of my favorite days of that trip because, after demonstrating how they forge the silver, the shop owners gave our group rein to explore.

I felt like Indiana Jones in the movies that I had watched as a kid–I bustled around the shop’s multiple levels, inside and outside, discovering myriad treasures: one-of-a-kind jewelry, peculiar trinkets, dusty lamps, aging manuscripts, even unlocked treasure chests!  It was wonderful, in the truest sense of the word.

Sometimes, the best part of travel is getting to approach the world with childlike wonder!

Photo of the Week: Cabo da Roca, Portugal

Sunset at Cabo da Roca

To start the weekend, here is a lovely sunset photo that I took at Cabo da Roca, Portugal, the westernmost point in mainland Europe.  Here’s to using the next few days to recharge for the upcoming week!

What to Eat and Drink in Portugal (and One Item to Skip….)

Homemade barbecue at my hostel

There is a lot to love about Portugal.  The people are kind, the nightlife is fun, and both the architectural and natural parts of the landscape are breathtakingly beautiful.  One of my favorite things about Portugal, though, is the food.  From the delicious seafood to the world-famous wines, my taste buds and belly were always sated during my trip!  My only regret is that, since I was traveling solo, I didn’t get to try cataplana, a traditional Portuguese seafood dish that, due to its size, can only be ordered by at least two people.  Oh, well–another reason to go back to Portugal!  Despite this disappointment, the food that I did get to eat (with one exception) has earned Portugal a solid spot amongst my top five food destinations in the world.  Read on to discover all of the tasty treats that you should definitely try (and one “specialty” that you should definitely skip) when you make it to Portugal!

Photo of the Week: Douro Valley, Portugal

Overlooking the Douro Valley

I’m not going to lie–I feel just a tad bit envious of all of the travel bloggers who are getting to meet each other and learn more about the industry at TBU Porto!  To console myself, I’ve been looking at my pictures from Portugal.  Here is one of my favorites from the Douro Valley winemaking region, just outside of Porto.  To everyone at TBU Porto, please live it up and drink lots of port on my behalf!

Plans, Interrupted: Changes for Travelers to Cuba and India

You know what they say about the best-laid plans….

As you may have gleaned from some of my previous posts, travel planning is something that is pretty important to me.  Even when I go for a more free-form type of travel, I still at the very least try to figure out the general outlines of trip and plan for the most important eventualities.  That being said, there are times when, despite one’s best-laid plans, greater forces intervene in unexpected ways.  Two recent examples come to mind: one that affects U.S. citizens’ travel to Cuba and one that affects my upcoming trip to India.

Photo of the Week: Pride Rock, Serengeti, Tanzania

“Pride Rock” in the Serengeti

This week’s #FriFotos theme on Twitter is “Clouds”, so I have decided to contribute yet another of my favorite photos from my trip to Tanzania.  This was a beautiful day in the Serengeti, surrounded by zebras and other wildlife, and, as you can see, breathtaking scenery.  I can’t wait to go on safari again!

See It, Or Skip It?: Laos

Wandering in Luang Prabang

The first post in my See It, Or Skip It? series focused on Vietnam.  More specifically, inspired by one of my Facebook friends, I used my pictures and experiences to explain why Vietnam should be on any traveler’s itinerary.  This week, it’s time to turn a critical eye on Laos.  As before, I’ll start with a brief list of places in Laos, and, for each place, I’ll give my unblemished (obviously biased) opinion as to whether someone should see it and skip it.  Read on, and tell me what you think!
